ZERO WASTE LOTIONS – GO PLASTIC FREE!

Lotion is a skincare staple for most people. We use lotion every day to keep our skin healthy and moisturized. As such, using a zero waste, sustainable lotion will have a significant impact on the environment over time. Thanks to the many sustainable skin care brands that produce zero waste balms and lotion bars, it’s easy to switch.

We’ve compiled a list of the top ten brands for finding the best zero-waste lotions to suit any skin type.

Why you should choose ZERO WASTE LOTION

Most lotions are packaged in large plastic bottles. After use, it can be hard or impossible to clean the bottles enough to recycle them. Even though more brands use recyclable and recycled plastic packaging, the lotion pumps or caps can usually not be recycled. The waste can add up, especially if we use lotion every day.

Many brands now offer a wide range of zero-waste lotions.

Zero Waste Lotion doesn’t contribute further to landfill waste. All products are biodegradable or recyclable. No waste is created, whether it’s the packaging or the ingredients. It’s important to select a zero-waste option whenever possible.

What to Look for in Zero Waste & Sustainable Lotion

There are many ways that a lotion could be environmentally friendly. Your needs and preferences will determine what you are looking for. When choosing a zero-waste, sustainable lotion, you should keep a few things in mind.

The majority of zero-waste lotions will have at least some, if no all, the following:

  • Reusable or recyclable, upcycled packaging
  • Packaging and ingredients that are biodegradable
  • Cruelty-Free
  • Organic
  • Vegan
  • Natural Fragrance
  • Ingredients sourced sustainably, ethically, or locally
  • Chemical-free
  • No silicone, parabens or sulfates
  • Transparente and sustainable production methods

OUR TOP SELECTIONS FOR ZERO WASTE LOTIONS, BARS AND BALMS

1) Ethique

Lotion Bars

Ethique Zero Waste is my favorite brand. The company is owned by a woman and is plastic-free. Ethique offers a variety of zero-waste lotion bars, both scented or unscented. There is even a travel-size option in a recyclable tube, so that you can transport your lotion without any mess. Each bar of lotion is vegan, palm-oil-free and made from only natural ingredients, such as organic cocoa butter ethically obtained from a Dominican Republic farm.

Ethique has a positive impact on the environment and donates 2% of its profits to various charities.

2) Plaine Products

Body Spray

Plaine Products was founded by two sisters and is led by them. They are a company that is vegan and wants to fight plastic pollution. Their palm oil-free, non-GMO and biodegradable body lotion has zero waste. Plaine Products’ lotion is available unscented, or in Rosemary Mint Vanilla, Citrus Lavender and Citrus Lavender. To prevent waste, they offer a refill that does not include a pump. You can also choose to pay in two-six monthly installments, and receive a 10% discount on the total cost.

Plaine Products began after one of its founders became aware of the plastic pollution at a beach. She was inspired to start a skincare company with zero waste, free of plastic and chemicals. They use everything they make including the lotion. Each product is waste-free and packaged in recycled materials. Plaine Products has been certified as a B Corp.

4) Cocokind

Cocokind, a San Francisco-based skincare brand owned by women, is known for its eco-friendly products. There are several zero-waste options available, including their multi-use butter and balm. Their skin butter is my personal favorite. The skin butter is made with natural ingredients such as coconut oil and Shea Butter, making it perfect for all over the body.

The vegan multi-use Balm is perfect for dry spots such as lips and hands. They donate 5% of each purchase to One Tree Plant.

Cocokind leads the way when it comes transparency for sustainable brands. They break down the ingredients used in each product and explain how they are made, what to do with it, and even how to recycle them.

5) Blendily

Lotion Bars

Blendily, a woman owned company, produces zero-waste botanical skincare. Their full line of sustainable skincare is great, but the lotion bars are even better. There are two scents: Lavender or Rosemary. Each sustainable small batch lotion bar is made with organic and vegan ingredients. Blendily has a garden in which they grow the majority of their ingredients. Blendily sources directly from local farmers if they cannot grow the ingredients themselves.

Blendily invites their customers to watch them as they make the products in their “Skincare Kitchen” in front of their store.

6) Etee

Etee offers a full line of zero-waste products, including its lotion bar. They offer refill bars without packaging and each lotion bar comes with a refillable tin. The lotion bars are biodegradable and compostable. They also contain six sustainable ingredients. Etee’s lotion bars are free of palm oil, sulfates and toxic chemicals. They are a plastic-free company. Their lower prices make their products more affordable.

7) Alaffia

Alaffia, another sustainable skincare company that I love, is also a personal favorite. This Black owned company offers its products in a variety of convenient stores like target. Alaffia has been Fair Trade, for Life and Good manufacturing practices certified. Alaffia products are all low-waste and natural. However, the body butters and balms are zero-waste moisturizers. Each product is made with unrefined West African shea butter and West African recipes.

Each lotion is available in different scents or unscented, and can be used for daily use, treating skin conditions, or to treat dry skin. The products are packed in a recyclable tin.

8) The Best

The Best Kind produces a luxurious, handmade body butter made from cocoa and shea butter. Their body butter contains only seven natural ingredients. The Best Kind’s body lotion is non GMO, vegan, mostly natural, and free of parabens. The lotion is available in sizes ranging from 1 ounce to 100 ounces. If you have dry or combination skin, and want something that can be used on your face and body, their body butter is the perfect choice. Each lotion is handcrafted in Brooklyn in small batches.

They are certified organic and non-GMO. Moon Valley Organics has a unique feature: they work to expand habitats for pollinators at their farm.

The “pollinator refuge” is a four-acre farm where many of the ingredients are grown. They source organic ingredients and local suppliers for anything they cannot grow. The host WOOF volunteers to educate them on organic farming, pollinator habitats and other topics. They also donate 10% of profits to support organizations.
